River Ridge opened its doors in 1972 to meet the need for chemical dependency treatment in Minnesota. Over the past 45 years, River Ridge’s clinical services have steadily evolved to reflect the most current research and new strategies, techniques, and materials have been continuously introduced. One thing has remained constant throughout the years – our commitment to providing the highest quality care.
In 2016 the River Ridge programs, including men’s and women’s outpatient, A Woman’s Way and Glen Creek Lodge joined the Options Minnesota family of programs. This merger has significantly increased our capacity to access specialized personnel as well as other resources. River Ridge is an active member of the Dakota County Chemical Health Providers Council and the Minnesota Association of Resources for Recovery and Chemical Health (MARRCH). All of our programs are licensed by the Minnesota Department of Human Services and our residential programs are also licensed by the Minnesota Department of Health. Clinical staff are required to maintain individual licensure through their respective Boards.
River Ridge provides holistic client care in the treatment of co-occurring mental health and addiction needs in a trauma-responsive, gender-responsive, and client-empowered setting.

- Our Clinical Model
We believe that everyone experiences behavioral health problems in a unique way and that each person follows a different path to healing, growth, and recovery. Our services are customized to meet the needs and build upon the strengths and abilities of our clients. Schedules and treatment plans are developed collaboratively and revised as necessary.
Evidence clearly indicates that life-long and total abstinence from all mood-altering substances should be the goal for individuals with a substance use disorder. Our programs are predicated on this
foundational principle. However, there are some individuals who may require medication-assisted treatment, such as Methadone or Suboxone, for extended periods of time. River Ridge programs will offer services to these individuals if all other admission criteria are met.
Men and women have differing physiological responses to both mood-altering substances and emotional distress. Men and women tend to approach interpersonal relationships differently. Men and women are exposed to differing social messages and pressures that significantly influence behaviors. Effective treatment programs take these differences into account at every level including physical environment, staff background and training, educational materials, as well as policies and procedures.
We believe that trauma is pervasive in the lives of our clients and that it has profound impact on both addiction and mental health. All of our clients have access to therapists who have been trained in a variety of trauma-specific clinical interventions. Every element of each program has been designed to create a safe environment where men and women can heal and grow.
We believe that our primary role as helping professionals is to facilitate each individual’s process of self-exploration, discovery, and growth. This process is most effective when we are able to help him/her leverage all of their personal, familial, and social resources. We work with each client to identify, strengthen, and utilize all available assets and supports. We also recognize that individuals vary with respect to learning style and our treatment plans take this into account.
In the past decade, Dakota County has become more diverse. We believe that culture is an integral component in human psycho-social development and has significant bearing on the processes of addiction and recovery. Our staff assists clients in addressing challenges that may be related to culture and, even more importantly, in accessing culturally-specific practices and supports. We strive for an attitude of humility; recognizing that our clients are the true experts in their culture.
Substance use disorders is a family illness. It is quite common for family members, partners, and friends to be adversely affected by the behaviors of a person with a substance use disorder. River Ridge offers a wide array of services for family and other concerned persons including family therapy and couples counseling. We also believe that family support can be the most valuable asset an individual possesses in their recovery from substance use and we encourage involvement at every stage of treatment.
