Different Types of Family Therapy

Different Types of Family Therapy

Every family has their own issues that they need to work through. Since every family is different, numerous techniques have been developed to help families work through their hiccups. At River Ridge, we offer a variety of mental health services in Burnsville and are dedicated to helping you and your loved ones. Below we have outlined some of the most popular methods used in family therapy.

Structural Therapy

Structural family therapy focuses on the interactions between family members. The therapist focuses on the family’s structure and how they communicate with each other. The therapist is there to help the family develop as a stronger entity rather than as individuals.

Systemic Therapy

Systemic family therapy concentrates on the entire family’s feelings. It works by identifying the ideas and attitudes of the entire family in order to uncover the deeper-rooted issue. Once the therapist has a full understanding of the family’s dynamics, they work to shift the problems or attitudes to a position that is less damaging to the relationship.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is used to change the way that people think or behave in order to help alleviate the root problem. When this type of therapy, the therapist might assign each family member a different “homework” assignment to complete before the next session.

Psychoeducation

Unlike other techniques, psychoeducation focuses on educating individuals with mental health conditions and their families. Our therapists advise these individuals on how to best help and support the individual with the condition.

If any of these techniques sound like they would be beneficial to your family or you are interested in learning more about the different techniques used in family therapy, don’t hesitate to contact us today.
