Is Marijuana Addictive?

Is Marijuana Addictive?

The use of marijuana on a recreational level has continued to climb over the past decade and will continue to increase with the legalization of marijuana in many states. While most marijuana users do not develop an addiction, it doesn’t mean that it doesn’t happen. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, roughly 30 percent of marijuana users develop problematic usage with the drug. Specifically, this is referred to as marijuana use disorder, and these individuals exhibit classic behaviors of someone struggling with addiction.

Abuse vs. Addiction

It’s important to note the distinction between marijuana abuse versus marijuana addiction or dependence. Abuse refers to individuals who utilize the drug despite understanding that the drug is having a negative impact on their lives. Those who struggle with marijuana addiction have a similar mindset, but they take it one step further because they display symptoms of addiction such as:

  • Needing an increasing amount of the substance to get the same effect
  • Spend more and more time thinking about using
  • Deny claims from surrounding friends and family members that they have changed
  • Marijuana begins to take on a central role in their life
  • In the case that the individual runs out of marijuana, they become irritable or agitated
  • Despite negative consequences mounting, marijuana use continues

Are There Withdrawal Symptoms?

THC tolerance does develop, but withdrawal symptoms are not as prevalent in marijuana users who stop compared to other drugs. For many, the physiological dependence of marijuana is more intense than physical dependence. Many users turn to marijuana for an escape from their normal thoughts.
