Children don’t experience mental health problems
Myth: Many people believe that mental health issues only affect the adult population.
Fact: Half of all mental health disorders show signs before the person turns 14, and three-quarters of mental health disorders start before the age of 24.
People with mental health problems are violent
Myth: Learning from the world of entertainment you probably think that all people with mental health issues are violent and unpredictable. While this can be true for some individuals, it is not an accurate statement about all individuals living with mental health issues.
Fact: Most people with mental illness are not violent and only 3-5% of violent acts can be attributed to people living with a serious mental illness.
I can’t do anything for a person with a mental health problem
Myth: Since it’s their mental health, there’s nothing I can do to help them.
Fact: Friends and loved ones can make a huge difference. Less than half of adults with diagnosable mental health problems receive needed treatment. Friends and family can be the important influences to seek treatment by just reaching out and letting them know you are available to help.
