Resisting Peer Pressure

Resisting Peer Pressure

Sadly, peer pressure is not something that fades as you age, it can happen at any time and any age. It can be hard to find the courage to stand up to those who are trying to convince you to do something a certain way. But, with practice the process does get easier. We provide a variety of mental health services in Burnsville and we want to give you some techniques that can help you say no to peer pressure.

Tone of Voice

It is natural to get defensive or aggressive when you are trying to say no to peer pressure. You peers usually don’t respond well to this so instead try a different approach to diffuse the situation.

Other Views

When facing peer pressure, acknowledge that you understand the other person’s point of view, but you want to pursue other options. This will help you peers understand that you understand what they want but it might not be the right decision for you.

Take A Step Back

If nothing else works, it is okay to take a step back from the situation or remove yourself completely. If you fear the potential reaction from your peers, it is okay to make up an excuse, such as a different commitment. Do not let peer pressure get the best of you, saying no to your peers will get easier with practice.

If you or a loved one could benefit from mental health services in Burnsville, don’t hesitate to contact our team at River Ridge.
