The Impact of Gender on Mental Health

The Impact of Gender on Mental Health

Both men and women across the globe struggle from mental health issues, but have you considered how gender plays a role in mental health disorders? Based on statistics alone found by an Oxford professor, women are 20-40 percent more likely to report a mental health issue in any given year.

Why Do Women Suffer More?

Whether you’ve looked for mental health treatment in Minnesota in an official capacity or you’re just beginning to take control of your struggles with mental illness, you may wonder why you are enduring these struggles. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) notes that there are differences on a scientific level that impact women’s mental health:

  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD): This disorder is a lot more intense than standard mood instability that can accompany a woman’s period. PMDD can produce more debilitating moods and result in depression, anger, or even suicidal thoughts. It’s no surprise that PMDD can have a significant impact on how a woman feels on a daily basis.
  • Perimenopausal depression: Another biological factor is called perimenopausal depression that appears in a woman’s 40s and 50s. As menopause sets in, a woman may experience hot flashes or increased irritability. Many women may experience increased depression during this time, something for which they should seek women’s mental health treatment centers in the area.
  • Perinatal depression: For many women who have just given birth, they may experience an all-encompassing depression that makes it difficult to even get out of bed. This is also referred to as postpartum depression, and there are many therapy programs in place to help women through this difficult time in their lives. Women who have suffered a miscarriage may also feel postpartum depression.

What About Men?

While women are more likely to suffer from mental disorders such as anxiety, depression, or somatic complaints, men are more likely to suffer from substance use disorders or antisocial disorders.
