There’s Hope for Those Looking for Affordable Mental Healthcare

If you’re looking for mental health care, additional stress associated with finding a way to pay for mental healthcare is the last thing you need. Fortunately, in the past couple decades those seeking mental health services in Burnsville and across the U.S. have seen some relief.

Most people aren’t aware of the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act passed in 2008. This law requires health insurance providers to treat mental health coverage equal to physical health coverage. Coupled with the Affordable Care Act, and an evolving attitude towards the importance of mental health, patients are better able to receive affordable mental health care.

With that said, there are still improvements to be made to provide affordable access to mental health services in Burnsville. It might be a frustrating process, but do your research. It may take some work, but finding affordable health services is no longer impossible.

If you have employer-provided insurance find out more about the mental health benefits you already have. Talk to your human resources representative or call the insurance company directly. Anytime you deal with insurance companies, there will be hoops to jump through.

Don’t let the documentation and phone calls get in the way of you getting the help you need.

We’ve compiled some statistics on the prevalence of mental health service providers who accept some form of assisted or reduced payment. It shows that if you’re willing to put a little work in, you can get the care you need without having to worry about affordability.

In 2010 the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), found the following statistics on how people paid for mental health services in Minnesota.

  • 28% of mental health facilities accepted payments made on a sliding scale.
  • 27% treated patients at no charge if they couldn’t pay.
  • 27% accepted Medicare and 40% accepted Medicaid.
  • 87% accepted state-financed health insurance.
